Meeting our board: Scott DeLoach
Q: How and when did you become acquainted with the co-op? Did you get involved right away – and in what ways? Become a member-owner right away?
A: I officially became involved with the co-op when I joined as a member-owner in May 2025.
I was attending a community day at Thomas Jefferson Elementary (where my kids go), and saw the BCM table. I had been seeing the yard signs around town, and wanted get involved, so I signed up!
Q: What prompted you to become a member-owner? What is your number?
A: I have lived in other communities with excellent co-op markets and have seen how much value and community they add to neighborhoods. When I saw the mission of BCM, I knew it was something that I wanted to support for the benefit of my family and my community. My member-owner number is 1674.
Q: Tell us about your decision to run for the board, and what did you hope to bring to the board?
A: Last summer, Kelly Allen (family friend and former BCM board member), called me to see if I would be interested in running for the board. I honestly hadn't given it any thought prior to that conversation, but it planted a seed.
Q: Tell us about your current involvement with the co-op – what responsibilities/roles do you have?
A: My primary responsibility for the last few months has been to spearhead the search for a General Manager. I am also serving as a BCM liaison for the Lee Iaccoca Institute of Global Entrepreneurship summer program at Lehigh University, a new initiative of the co-op.
Q: What is gratifying to you as a board member? Why is it important to you to be on the board?
A: I believe that if you want to see something happen in the world, you need to get involved. The board is one small way I can contribute. The work we do is all an investment, but it will be extremely gratifying to be able to shop at the store for the first time and know that I helped in my own small way.
Q: What's one thing about the board that member-owners and/or community don't know and
why is it important they do?
A: We want the store to open just as much as everyone else! Being actively involved in the process has given me something to do with the impatient energy I personally feel about the store opening. We've made some significant progress of late, and there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Q: What would you tell someone who's considering running for our board?
A: It's really beneficial for there to be a diversity of skill sets on the board. If you have a heart for getting involved in your community, you can make an impact without any prior experience.
Q: What do you like to do outside of your board work – employment, hobbies, family – whatever you'd like to share?
A: I am a husband, father, educator, baseball fan, amateur backyard gardener, and very amateur woodworker.
