Tax-Deductible Donation: Qualified Charitable Distributions from Traditional IRAs

If you are 70½ years old or older and you have a Traditional IRA (Independent Retirement Account) you can make a donation straight from your IRA to the Bethlehem Co-op Market's non-profit partner (Cooperative Development Fund of CDS) and save significant money on your taxes.

Traditional IRAs are funded by employers who put money into an account for you. This retirement money is considered part of your income but the income taxes are deferred until you withdraw it in retirement. When you withdraw the money you pay income tax at a rate based on your combined sources of income in that year. You are required to withdraw Traditional IRA funds – even if you don't need them – starting at age 73 in what are called Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs). You MUST pay taxes on RMDs – unless you donate some or all of that money directly to a qualified charity.

So, if you donate some or all of your RMD to the co-op through its charitable partner you not only don't pay taxes on that money, you can also deduct the donation from your adjusted gross income for that year. And even if you haven't started taking RMDS, but are over 70½ years old, you can make such a donation.

If you are interested in making the Bethlehem Co-op Market part of your legacy ask your IRA custodial institution about making a Qualified Charitable Distribution to the Cooperative Development Fund of CDS, specifying the Bethlehem Co-op Market as the beneficiary of the funds.
